Summary
This trial will test how well recording brain activity can help map out emotions and how different brain networks may be linked to psychiatric symptoms.
Who is the study for?
This trial is for individuals with epilepsy at UCSF who are undergoing surgical electrode implantation and can cooperate with study tasks. It's not suitable for those unable to consent, with significant brain lesions, or cognitive deficits that prevent reliable task completion.
What is being tested?
The study investigates how the emotion network in the brain operates by having participants view visual stimuli and receive electrical stimulation. The aim is to understand emotional behavior changes and affective symptoms like depression and anxiety.
What are the potential side effects?
Since this research involves observation of neural activity rather than drug testing, traditional side effects aren't a concern. However, there may be risks associated with discomfort from viewing stimuli or potential stress during electrical brain stimulation.
