Summary
This trial aims to compare two approaches for identifying and addressing substance use in adolescents in primary care settings. The study will look at how well each approach works in reducing substance use and behavior problems, improving communication
Who is the study for?
This trial is for youths aged 12-17 with substance use disorders, who come to primary care appointments with a caregiver. Both must be fluent in English or Spanish and able to use a tablet for consent procedures.
What is being tested?
The study compares standard adolescent-only substance abuse interventions against family-inclusive approaches. It measures drug use, behavior problems, communication about drugs, quality of life, and therapy attendance over one year.
What are the potential side effects?
Since this trial involves counseling methods rather than medication, traditional side effects are not expected. However, participants may experience emotional discomfort discussing sensitive topics during the sessions.
