Summary

This trial will test a new intervention for college students who drink heavily to cope with anxiety and depression, which can lead to alcohol dependence.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for college students who often drink heavily, partly to deal with anxiety and depression. They should have had at least one heavy drinking episode recently but shouldn't be severely alcohol dependent or have a serious mental health diagnosis like hallucinations or suicidal thoughts.
What is being tested?
The study is testing two approaches: Brief Motivational Intervention (BMI) and the new Motivational and Cognitive Intervention for Drinkers (MCID). These are designed to help students who drink due to stress, anxiety, or sadness.
What are the potential side effects?
Since this trial involves counseling interventions rather than medications, there may not be typical 'side effects.' Participants might experience discomfort discussing personal issues related to drinking, anxiety, or depression.
