Summary
This trial will test if a smartphone intervention can help black college students who are overweight or obese lose and maintain weight loss.
Who is the study for?
This trial is for Black community college students aged 18-25 who are overweight or obese, interested in losing weight through diet and exercise, and own a smartphone. They must be able to attend follow-up visits over a year. Pregnant individuals, those on other weight loss programs or medications affecting weight, with recent significant weight loss, eating disorders, or type I diabetes cannot join.
What is being tested?
The study tests if using smartphones and text messaging with health coaching can help young adults lose weight and keep it off at 6 and 12 months. It will also look into how well participants stick to self-monitoring their diet and physical activity.
What are the potential side effects?
Since this intervention involves lifestyle changes guided by technology rather than medication, side effects may include the typical challenges of dieting such as hunger or fatigue from increased physical activity.
