Summary

This trial is testing a new way to retrain nurses in neonatal resuscitation. It targets nurses in Canadian NICUs who face challenges like budget cuts and high staff turnover. The new training method uses various tools like books, online exams, and practice stations to help nurses stay skilled in emergency newborn care.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for newly recruited registered nurses working in level 2 and 3 perinatal centers who have joined within the last three months. Nurses who have previously completed NRP training are not eligible to participate.
What is being tested?
The study is examining two methods of Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) training: a traditional single-day session versus a new longitudinal approach. The goal is to determine which method better maintains nurses' resuscitation skills, considering educational outcomes and financial implications.
What are the potential side effects?
Since this trial involves education and training methods rather than medical treatments, there are no direct physical side effects associated with participation. However, stress or fatigue from the learning process could be potential indirect effects.

Trial Design

2Treatment groups
Experimental Treatment
Group I: Single-day NRP trainingExperimental Treatment1 Intervention
This group will follow the single-day NRP training course that is currently the standard. It usually takes 8 hours to complete this training course and the nurses are released from their clinical duty to attend the training course.
Group II: Longitudinal one year NRP TrainingExperimental Treatment1 Intervention
This group will follow the longitudinal NRP training course. The longitudinal NRP training course will consist of nine 30-minute modules that will be taught every 6-8 weeks over a period of one year. The nurses will attend the different modules of the training course at their work place and during their work shift so they will have to be released from their clinical duty only 30 minutes at a time.

Other Research
Neonatal Resuscitation Training (NRT) involves a comprehensive approach that includes book reading, online exams, performance stations, Integrated Skills Station Assessment (ISSA), and simulations. These components work together to ensure that healthcare providers are well-prepared to handle neonatal emergencies. The new educational strategy being studied aims to improve retraining efficiency and knowledge retention, which is vital due to the infrequent occurrence of critical neonatal events. By enhancing the frequency and quality of training, healthcare providers can maintain their skills and readiness to perform life-saving interventions effectively, ultimately improving outcomes for neonatal patients.
