Summary

This trial is testing a program to help healthcare workers deal with stress and trauma, which has been amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic. The program has the potential to improve trauma resilience and mental health among nurses and PSW, which may ultimately improve patient care and benefit the hospital system during and even beyond the pandemic.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for nurses and personal support workers at Unity Health Toronto Providence Healthcare who are over 18, work at least one shift per week, can access the internet and a device with a camera, speak English, and aren't currently in other psychotherapy. Those with cognitive impairments, high suicide risk or active psychosis are excluded.
What is being tested?
The STEP program aims to train healthcare workers in skills to manage stress and trauma during COVID-19. It's an online intervention designed to improve mental health resilience among nurses and PSWs by providing them tools to cope better with their challenging work environment.
What are the potential side effects?
Since this is a psychological support program rather than a drug treatment, traditional side effects are not expected. However, participants may experience emotional discomfort when discussing traumatic events as part of the therapy process.
