Summary
This trial tests if training mentors in cultural awareness and social justice can improve their interactions with low-income youth of color, leading to better outcomes for these youth.
Who is the study for?
This study is for low-income youth of color aged 10-16 eligible for the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, and their parents who can engage in English or Spanish. It's also for mentors accepted into this mentoring program. Those not fitting these criteria are excluded.
What is being tested?
The trial tests a cultural humility and social justice training program for volunteer mentors to see if it improves interactions with youth and the effectiveness of mentorship programs. Participants will be randomly assigned to either receive this training or be placed in a control group without it.
What are the potential side effects?
Since this is a behavioral intervention focusing on training and support rather than medical treatment, traditional physical side effects are not applicable. However, participants may experience changes in perspective or heightened awareness regarding issues of race and social justice.

Other Research
Treatments for racism, such as Cultural Humility and Social Justice Training, work by educating participants on cultural humility and systemic inequalities, encouraging self-reflection on personal biases, and equipping them with skills to challenge discriminatory practices. These interventions foster empathy, awareness, and proactive behavior, improving interactions and outcomes for marginalized groups like low-income youth of color.
This is crucial for patients of racism as it helps create a more inclusive and supportive environment, mitigating the psychological and social impacts of discrimination.
