High risk assessment +1 More for Cardiovascular Disease
Research has shown that the presence of heart disease and stroke is higher in the Indo-Asian population compared to other ethno-cultural groups. This may be due to multiple reasons such as a higher presence of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, and lower levels of physical activity. This program will bring together the Calgary Indo-Central-Asian communities and the Calgary Healthcare community to help reduce the rate of heart disease and stroke through a supportive, culturally-sensitive program that is community-based through the following steps: 1. Increase awareness of heart disease and stroke through education among the Calgary Indo-Central-Asian population. 2. Identify early, the risk factors related to heart disease and stroke through screening programs. 3. Provide appropriate follow-up care to the population at risk for heart disease and stroke.

Participant Referral to Primary Care Network Physician for Cardiovascular Disease
High blood pressure, elevated blood glucose and high cholesterol are related to the increased risk of stroke and heart disease. Many studies have shown that this risk can be significantly reduced by lowering blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol levels. Through a collaborative effort between Calgary Safeway pharmacists and Calgary Health Region family physician PCN's, U-CHAMP will deliver a program to assist in the identification and management of people with elevated blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol and through this effort, reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke in the urban Calgary population aged 18-85 years.
Carotenoid
Lycopene for Preventing Prostate Cancer
This trial is testing if lycopene supplements, found in tomatoes, can prevent prostate cancer in healthy people. Lycopene might work by reducing damage from free radicals and affecting prostate health markers. Lycopene has been studied for its potential to reduce the risk of prostate cancer through its antioxidant properties and other mechanisms.

HOP'N After-school Program for Obesity Prevention
This study presents evaluates the effectiveness of the Healthy Opportunities for Physical Activity(HOP'N) After-School Program on preventing obesity in children. The investigators hypothesized that normal and overweight/obese children attending after-school sites randomized to the control condition will increase in weight status to a greater extent compared to children at sites randomized to receive the HOP'N program. The investigators also hypothesized that after-school intervention HOP'N sites will increase in physical activity and healthful eating opportunities compared to control sites.

Exercise training for Spinal Cord Injury
Bone loss is a common secondary complication of spinal cord injury (SCI), and treatments used to reverse this condition have equivocal effectiveness. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of intense multi-modal training on bone health, body fat, and quality of life in persons with SCI. Participants will complete 6 months of training during which various measures will be obtained at 0, 3, and 6 months. Control subjects are also being recruited to complete testing but not participate in training.

Increased Dairy Intake +1 More for Obesity
Maintaining a healthy body weight is a major challenge for the majority of Canadians. A lifestyle strategy that promotes maintenance of a healthy body weight and, perhaps most importantly, can be incorporated into daily life with relative ease is essential. This study will determine if an effective strategy includes increased physical activity in conjunction with higher intakes of dairy products immediately following exercise. Fifty-six overweight adult males who do not regularly exercise will be assigned to one of four groups for 12 weeks. All groups will preform 12 weeks of exercise training (1 hour of cycling per day, 5 times per week). Two groups will consume supplemental low fat milk (3 servings per day) with one these groups consuming it immediately after exercise while the other will consume it either well before or long after the exercise session. The other two groups will consume a carbohydrate drink that has the same amount of energy as the low fat milk, with one of these groups consuming the drink right after exercise and the other another group will consume it either well before or long after the exercise session. Markers of health status including body weight, muscle mass, and bone mass will be measured at the start and after the 12- week intervention. The investigators anticipate that providing the low fat milk immediately after exercise will result in the most favorable changes in health outcomes, and provide a realistic lifestyle intervention for overweight individuals to attain a healthy body weight, and by doing so, optimize their ability to prevent chronic disease.

Health Coaching for Metabolic Syndrome
Antipsychotic medications frequently cause metabolic side-effects, such as abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, cholesterol abnormalities, and blood sugar dysregulation, all of which can lead to what is known as the Metabolic Syndrome and serious long-term cardiovascular health problems. Therefore, it is important that metabolic issues be addressed as part of a holistic approach to the mental health treatment of these patients. As with the general population, improving metabolic health involves lifestyle changes - i.e., addressing daily habits regarding eating, physical exercise, stress and sleep management, and lifestyle habits such as smoking. However, there is growing recognition in the medical field that education is not enough for people to create meaningful and sustained lifestyle change. The emerging field of Integrative Health Coaching addresses this issue and provides a clinical framework for helping people successfully develop and achieve personalized lifestyle goals. The investigators have therefore decided to investigate whether health coaching techniques may have benefit in addressing metabolic health issues in people with psychosis disorders. The intent is to complement usual psychiatric and medical care, and also promote patient engagement in managing one's overall health. This study will investigate whether Integrative Health Coaching is a useful clinical tool to facilitate healthy lifestyle behaviour and thereby improve metabolic health in people with psychosis disorders.

Serotonin Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor
Desvenlafaxine Succinate for Healthy Subjects
DVS is the main metabolite of the antidepressant/anxiolytic medication Venlafaxine (Effexor). Like parent compound, DVS is an antidepressant inhibiting both serotonin (5-HT) and norepinephrine (NE) reuptake. However, no studies to date describe the in vivo potency of this drug on monoamines reuptake. Consequently, it appears essential to determine the potency of DVS in human subjects using a wide dose range in order to determine at which dose(s) it starts inhibiting 5-HT and NE reuptake. The investigators are interested in learning whether there is a gender difference in the dose of the study medication at which NE reuptake inhibition occurs.
