Summary

This trial is testing JASPER, a play-based therapy, on young children with autism who have limited verbal skills. The therapy uses guided play to help these children improve their social and communication abilities. JASPER (Joint Attention, Symbolic Play, Engagement, and Regulation) is a naturalistic developmental behavioral intervention that has been found effective for promoting social communication in young children with autism.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for children aged 18 months to 5 years with Autism Spectrum Disorder who are minimally verbal or have emerging phrase speech. They must have a nonverbal mental age of at least 12 months and a confirmed diagnosis of autism.
What is being tested?
The study tests JASPER, a play-based intervention for autism, delivered by either clinicians or parents. It measures the effectiveness using BOSCC and ELSA-T assessments over a period of 20 weeks, with adjustments based on initial response after the first half.
What are the potential side effects?
Since JASPER is a behavioral intervention involving structured play activities facilitated by clinicians or caregivers, it does not involve medication; therefore, traditional physical side effects are not expected.

Other Research
Behavioral and educational interventions, such as the JASPER play-based approach, work by enhancing social communication and engagement through structured play and interaction. These interventions often involve techniques like modeling, prompting, and reinforcement to encourage desired behaviors and skills. The mechanisms of action include improving joint attention, increasing symbolic play, and fostering social reciprocity. These treatments are crucial for autism patients as they target core deficits, helping children develop essential social and communication skills that improve their overall functioning and quality of life.
