Summary

This trial will test whether an online intervention can reduce firearm injury risk in caregivers of people with dementia.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for informal caregivers in the U.S. who look after someone with dementia at home and have access to a firearm. Participants must speak English or Spanish and have internet access. Caregivers of those in legal custody or institutionalized cannot join.
What is being tested?
'Safety in Dementia' is an online intervention being tested nationally for its effectiveness on caregivers managing dementia patients with firearm access, using randomized assignment and long-term follow-up.
What are the potential side effects?
Since this study involves an online intervention rather than medication, traditional physical side effects are not applicable. However, participants may experience emotional or psychological stress.

Group I: Safety in DementiaExperimental Treatment1 Intervention
Safety in Dementia is an online tool that, in a stepwise fashion, guides a caregiver individual through decisions related to firearm access for a person with dementia. It includes information and a comparison of the options and their risks and benefits. It guides the caregiver through clarification of personal feelings and values and identifying their decision/plan.
